Animation progress so far - 1.22
So far I have done 82 seconds of my animation. I have around 30 seconds left to do,which will be stop motion.
My animation so far:
To finish it I will come in on Wednesday (9th) and Friday (11th) to finish the last 30 seconds. I have done everything on the checklists.

P3. Animation process and equipment set up
Flash
I am using flash to create the "dream" effect. For each object I created I made a different layer. I then put the object in the right position by using keyframes. To move an object, such as the football I used a motion tween. To do this you "ctrl" and click on the start keyframe. You then press "create motion tween". To get it moving you put the object at the starting position on the first keyframe then at the end of the keyframe you put the object where you want it to stop. You can tell that the motion tween has worked if a line shows the journey of the object and if the keyframes turn blue.

Stop motion in flash:
After I had the stop motion pictures I needed I imported them into flash and put them into the order they needed to be in. I then edited some of them e.g. added z's to show snoring. I did it all on different layers and used keyframes to place them, like I did before.
Some of the stop motion I edited in flash:
All animation put together:
After editing the stop motion in flash I put all the videos I had created together in premiere pro. I also added sound effects and effects e.g film dissolve. Sunday, 29 June 2014

P3. Final animation planning
'The dream'
It will be a short film. I will be making it on flash and mix it with stop motion. The short film will then be put together in premiere. I have chosen these styles as I am interested to see what they will look like together.
The genre will be slightly comedy and fantasy. I think it will be fantasy because it's about someone's dream.
Storyline: The animation will be 2 minutes, 120 seconds
The man will be sleeping and dreaming about being a footballer. He would score a goal and whilst celebrating get hit by the ball. After this the person will wake up and get ready for work, unhappy. The guy works in an office wearing a suit at a computer.
P3. Set design for stop motion
Set 1 will be used to film the opening of my animation. It will be created out of cardboard, tissue paper and a real clock. I will be using a wooden mannequin to be the person.
The second set will be the office where the character works. It will be used for the "at work" scene which is the last scene. It will also be made out of cardboard and tissue paper.

P3 Animation progress so far
My first idea was to do a lyric video for the song I miss her by Jessie J. I did this on flash:
I decided that I didn't want to do this anymore as I didn't like it. Also there are many lyric videos for the song. Instead I have now decided to do a music video but still for the song I miss her by Jessie J. I am still using flash. I am using different angle lines to show movement a bit like its a video being rotoscoped.
This is my music video so far. I have done the introduction and the window that is in the video all the way through.

P3. Animation research - Animated lyric video
Payphone - Maroon 5 ft Wiz Khalifa
I like this lyric video because it is very detailed and uses a thought/speak bubble a bit like the idea I have for my animation.
Magic - Coldplay
I like this video because I like the style of animation they have used.
Count on me - Bruno Mars
I like this lyric video because it is cartoony which is the way I want to do my video. Also it is created on flash which is the software I will be using.
However I also like the idea of hand drawn animation. For example I like the line effect of the person who is made out of entirely lines and making it all on paper and putting it together in after effects.
P3. New initial planning
Animation planning
I will be making a animated lyric video. It will be created on flash and I will be doing the drawing using a tablet. It will be for all ages and for anyone that likes the song. I have chosen to do this because I like music and have always wanted to do a video.
Some ideas:
Animated music video of Jessie J - I miss her.
- Has a girl praying at a bed. At the beginning the artist and song name will be on the bed.
- A thought bubble is above her with the lyrics and appropriate actions.

P3. Animation research - stop motion
2D stop motion of a character that seems to be Michael Jackson. I like it because it looks complicated but I think it would be easier than 3D.

A cop lego episode thats has idiotic cops just like my characters. It also has humour which is similar to what my animation will be.

The lego movie trailer gave me ideas for my trailer. My trailer would introduce the characters to and their day to day lives and the adventure they have to go on.
P3. Initial planing
Animation planning
I will be doing a trailer for a animated film. It will be stop motion and put together in after effects. The genre will be comedy and it'll be for all ages. I have chosen to do a trailer because I had a couple of ideas so I thought id put then all together.
Some ideas
The main characters will be 2 idiotic and clumsy policemen. They are best of friends who work and live with each other.
Scenes:
- They are running and one gets shot. The one that is shot blames the other one. Then a storm trooper comes out "Oh sorry wrong film", walks of and shows a "Hi mum" sign. The character that hasn't been shot kicks him.
- They go in the wrong direction and end up on a beach. They look at each other and then run to the sea. They stop and try and get their clothes of. One is angry he can't get them off. "Dude they won't come of". The other is on the floor in half "Yeah I know, I pulled to hard".
- Beginning- Starts of introducing them, they are best of friends. Mid shot of each character and their names. They live together…. Try to fit through the door at the same time. They even go to the toilet together.
- Driving to work singing alone to a really girly song. They park up and crashes the car. "Oh know not again Bob" "Sorry" reverses into another car. Then parks it and walk out of a damaged car into the police station.
- They are walking in a street and moan at a lady for walking to slow. A car speeds past and they cheer it on.
- Talk with a police captain "you have to go after….". Introduction to the villain, the Thrillernator. Who is a girly girl "Hi there", waving.

P2 How does your product fit into current trend
I think that my animation would fit in with current trends. I think this because there are similar Tv shows and films that are popular. My animation is like many of them but with a difference. It combines different shows and films into one. So weather you like The Simpsons, Archer, Monster Inc, James Bond you should like my animated TV show. The characters are also a mix of human and monster, which some Tv shows and films have such as Toy Story, which has humans and taking toys. Another reason that I think it fits in with current trend is because spy shows and films have become comical as well as action packed and serious.
My animated Tv series would be shown on Cartoon network as it is full of animated shows of all types. I think that it should be shown around 6pm. This is because its a time were the target audience would be back from school/college and be sat relaxing watching TV. Also 6pm is a bit late for younger views so it would only be shown to the target audience. Another way my animation could be shown is on Youtube as it is only 15 minutes an episode and the target audience, early teens to late teenagers watch it daily.

P2 Representation and ethics in cartoons
Why does the writer of the article believe Rio 2 is problematic in terms of its representations?
The writer believes that Rio 2 is problematic in terms of its representation because of each characters accents. The writer believes this because the lead characters are voiced by white people and uses african-american actors, Jamie Foxx and Will.i.am to voice the hip-hop, urban birds. This suggests that the heroes and main characters are voiced by white people and the funny, colourful characters are voiced by african-americans.
What are PEPs and why are they an issue for racial representation?
PEPs means problem contexts, entertainment contexts and performance contexts. Dr Charles Da Costa, a British lecturer who writes about racial stereotyping in animation says:
"Within PEPs, black people and other genotypes have to be associated with vexing circumstances," he says. "Strive to pacify, make others happy and be exceptional or extraordinary – far from 'normal'. Villainy, exoticism, jocularity and athleticism are common indicators of this malaise. Images of ethnicity do not need to be conveyed within the narrow scope of PEPs."
Why does Da Costa believe we end up with stereotypes in animation?
Dr Charles Da Costa believes:
"Decisions on character and performance must be made quickly in order for design and production processes to commence and advance. So regarding representations of ethnicity and epidermal type, family animation often finds itself in a bind. It consciously and subconsciously weighs financial against moral obligations, then unconsciously opts for the 'safe' representational defaults – stereotypes."
What does Turbo say about social mobility?
In the film Turbo the snail, voiced by Ryan Reynolds has sidekicks voiced by Samuel L Jackson, Snoop Dogg and Michelle Rodriguez. Turbo also has human companions who are Mexicans who run a taco stand and a Vietnamese woman. In Turbo social mobility is only presented on the white characters. This suggests that non-whites should take care and facilitate for white characters with social mobility.

My animation would take 8 weeks per a episode. It is a 2D animation a bit like South Park, so not very detailed. However I would like the characters and backgrounds to be detailed and the movement not so much. I would like to have a theme tune at the beginning, in the opening credits of my animation. For that I would need:
A solo singer: under 10 minutes = £1,011.60 - £3,272.84
A full orchestra: under 10 minutes = £4,760.49 - £13,091.34

P2. Regulatory bodies - BBFC
About
The British board of film classification, BBFC is an independent company that has classified cinema films since 1912 and videos/DVDs since 1984. As well as cinema films and video/DVDs they also classify some video games under the 2010 Video recordings act. It is funded by the film industry and chooses the national classification and censorship of films in the UK. BBFC was created in 1912 by members of the film industry who wanted to manage the censorship of their films instead of the government.
Funding
The BBFC is an independent, non-profit organisation. This means that it is funded by the fees they charge for their services. The BBFC never receives subsidies from the film industry nor the government. The price depends on the length of the film. They also consult the department of culture, media and sport before making any charges to its fees.
Legislation
Before putting a classification on a film or DVD the BBFC must decided whether it is suitable for viewing and is in conflict with the law or was created by committing a criminal offence. However the BBFC has no legal rights. They use the licensing legislation which can ignore or accept the BBFCs decision. The BBFC uses the video recordings act (VRA) 1984 to decided whether it is suitable for viewing. Also all films that are submitted are checked for potential have to the viewer and society, depiction of criminal behaviour, illegal drugs, violent or horrific human behaviour. As well as these there are other legal considerations such as indecent images of children, animal cruelty, obscenity, racial hatred and human rights. To decide these the BBFC examiners analyse and make recommendations on the legality of the films. If there is any concern about a scene or the whole thing they might seek external expert advice and if the scene or film does breach the law it will be asked to remove the scene or if the whole thing is against the law then it may be denied a certificate and rejected.
Rating process
To decide the rating certification the BBFC examiners will watch the film. Whilst watching they will make notes on:
- General context - plot, characters, outline of individual
- Timing of key moments, including camera angles, type of shots, on and off screen moments
- Bad language, sex and drug references. The rating is decided on these factors. However if the film falls between ages the film will be watched by another examiner team, which includes the senior examiner and the head of policy. If the film still causes difficulty it would be talked about in the weekly examiners meeting to get more opinions. Also it may be referred to senior management.
Coraline
Coraline was certified as a PG however many people have disagreed with this because it is creepy and slightly a horror. Coraline was certified as a PG because:
- PG guidlines allow some elements of horror
- The film feature mitigating factors which lessen the intensity of the more frightening scenes
- Coraline was certified as a PG instead of a U because of her characteristics and some scares come from the people or places that should feel safe to children such as their home and parents
- Coraline fits into the kids fantasy film category
- Coraline also had mild language - her mother says "rat crap" in a scene that had an overweight actress, Miss Spink's that appears as a character from a painting wearing just a mermaid tail and some glittery stickers on her breasts. However this was okay because the PG classification is described as offering "general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. Unaccompanied children of any age may watch. A PG film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children"
- The film was also watched in 3D to see of the 3D version should have a different age rating as some films feel scarier in 3D. However the examiners thought both 2D and 3D was suitable for the PG rating.

P2 EVIDENCE OF DEVELOPMENT, EXPRESSION SHEETS AND ACTION SHEETS
1st idea
My first idea was to make the character look very cartoony. I like the head/bag but I'm not to keen on the body so I thought about how I could change it and I thought I'd try using a more human like body. I created this by hand drawing then added colour in photoshop.
2nd idea
My second idea was to have the bag head on a human body. I like the body but I think the head is to cartoony for the body. I created it on photoshop.
3rd idea
With this idea I kept the human body but changed the head so it wasn't so square. I prefer this design over the others. I created it using photoshop.
4th idea
I thought about the types of animation I could use. The other designs are for computer animation so I thought about stop motion - Lego. I designed a slight idea of what my character would look like made out of Lego. If I made it out of Lego I would draw the clothes and eyes and stick them on with blue tac. I created this on photoshop by using the other designs as a outline.
Final idea
I decided that I preferred idea 3. I like this idea because it has a human body but a cartoon style head. However the head isn't too cartoony and boxed like ideas 1-2.
Facial expressions
It was hard to think of how my character would show facial expressions because he has a bag on his head. I thought that it would be funny that when he felt these emotions he would get out a marker pen then draw them on his bag.
